Fire protection
In the event of a fire, you must act QUICKLY, CORRECTLY and CALMLY.
NOTIFY - RESCUE – EXTINGUISH
- NOTIFY:
- THOSE WHO ARE IN DANGER
- THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS AUTOMATICALLY NOTIFIED WHEN THE FIRE ALARM IS TRIGGERED
- RESCUE:
- ASSIST WITH EVACUATION TO OUTDOOR AREAS/ANOTHER ZONE
- EXTINGUISH:
- EXTINGUISH USING FIRE HOSES, FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
- OR SMOTHER THE FIRE WITH BLANKETS ETC
NB! CLOSE ALL DOORS TO STOP FIRE AND SMOKE FROM SPREADING!
- ALWAYS KEEP YOURSELF INFORMED ABOUT:
- ESCAPE ROUTES
- THE LOCATION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHING EQUIPMENT
- HOW TO USE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
- FIRE INFORMATION PANELS
- DETAILED FIRE INSTRUCTIONS
Fire protection
Persons present should try to extinguish a starting fire. If you do not succeed quickly, you must trigger the fire alarm (if it has not already been triggered). Ensure that everyone in the room evacuates.
Upon triggering the fire alarm, the duty supervisor at Haukeland Security University Hospital and the fire department will be automatically notified.

Extinguishing fires
Different methods can be used to extinguish a fire:
- reducing the supply of oxygen
- cooling (e.g. using water or CO2)
- removing flammable material
Familiarise yourself with the location of fire extinguishers, emergency showers and any fire blankets.
Examples of fire extinguishing equipment
The following is a list of codes and their areas of application:
- A: Wood, paper, textiles
- B: Flammable liquids and gases, chemicals
- C: Electrical installations
- Water
- (A-extinguishers) is used in the event of fire in wood products, paper, textiles etc. It must not be used on electrical equipment or wires, on substances which react violently to water (e.g. sodium, potassium, phosphorus) or on liquids which do not mix with water. If clothes are on fire use the emergency shower, drop to the floor and roll over, try to smother the fire using a (fire) blanket or similar. Request assistance for this.
- CO2-extinguisher
- (ABC-extinguishers) Used for fires in flammable liquids, electrical systems, wiring etc. CO2 evaporates quickly and causes no damage. NOTE: CO2 must not be used on burning alkali metals (e.g. Na, K). Do not use CO2-extinguishers near people, because the CO2 stream is extremely cold and causes frost injuries. In addition CO2 displaces O2 and can, in worst case scenarios, lead to suffocation.
- Powder extinguisher
- (ABC-extinguishers) can be used for all types of fires.
Fire extinguishers that have been used must NOT be returned to their original location. Instead, they should be sent for refilling and resealing.
Fire Instructions
The department of Biomedicine is required to have documentation which shows that fire protection training has been given to all employees.
By fire protection training is meant basic training in the following:
- Escape routes and mustering points
- Location of extinguishing equipment/ manual fire alarms and instructions in their use
- Fire instructions and internal procedures
- Work involving laboratory animals
- Special risks in the building
- Duties relating to fire protection
- Notification procedures
- The structure of UiB’s fire protection organisation
Details for the above points can be found under "Fire protection training".
Fire protection training
1. Current escape routes are shown on floor plans posted on every level. Study these carefully and learn, where the fastest escape route is from the different parts of the floor. Many of these escape routes are normally closed and only open when the fire alarm is triggered. If anyone wants help with an inspection to become familiar with relevant escape routes, please contact the person in charge of the area.
In the event of a fire alarm, all employees/ students should muster at the following specified mustering points so that head counts can be conducted:
- 1st floor through 5th floor.
- People on the 1st floor evacuate via the “Varemottak” and go further to the square at the side of the Workshop Building.
- People located on level 2 through 5 evacuate via the main door on the 2nd floor and continue down to the mustering point.
- The bicycle parking at the side of the Workshop Building and the square below to act as a mustering point.
- 6th floor through 9th floor
- People located on level 6 to 9 at the time of a fire alarm, will evacuate from the building and reassemble by the parking lot next to Ulriken643 Cable car lower station.
2. Everyone must familiarize themselves with the location of fire extinguishing equipment (see the floor plan on each level). The red boxes on the wall are manual fire alarms. By pressing these, the fire alarm is triggered.
3. When the fire alarm is triggered, everyone must vacate the premises via the closest escape exit and assemble at the designated mustering area. If you experience that doors do not unlock, promptly press the plastic cover in the green box on the wall adjacent to the door. Some double doors are fitted with panic bars, do not hesitate to use these to open both doors simultaneously, ensuring a sufficiently wide opening for escape. Do not be afraid to use the green boxes and the panic handles when the fire alarm is triggered. Please inform the site fire protection officer, if any of these have been used so that they can be reset. When a fire alarm is triggered, it necessitates, irrespective of whether it is a fire drill or an actual emergency. Unless otherwise notified, you must always react to a fire alarm and start evacuating the building.
You must always assume that there is a fire whenever the alarm is triggered.
In the event of an evacuation, the site fire protection officer will oversee the complete and orderly exit of all persons. Ensure the safety of any visitors at site during evacuation.
4. Emergency sacrificing of laboratory animals. In the event of an emergency that necessitates the evacuation of a building during an animal surgical procedure, it is imperative to perform an emergency euthanasia of the laboratory animals, if feasible. See chapter for working with animals.
5. Particular risks in the building include the use of flammable liquids and gas. You must therefore exercise caution when working with such liquids and gases. Remember to turn off gas supplies when the fire alarm is triggered!
6. It is important that the team leader/ person responsible for the laboratory informs new employees and temporary staff about the fire instructions and that the site fire protection officer/ building fire protection officer are contacted in order to provide the necessary training.
7. The fire services will be automatically notified when a fire alarm is triggered.
- Remember that lifts are not escape routes!
- The bridge connecting BBB and Haukeland University Hospital is not an approved escape route!
8. When organising the fire protection organisation, a site fire protection officer must be appointed for each entity. If you have any questions about fire safety, contact the site fire protection officer, who will pass them on.
